I Am Yours

“My soul has kept Thy commandments; and I love them exceedingly.” Psalm119:167

Today completes our meditation on this psalm. Although we have merely scratched the surface, there is still a lot that we learnt from it. After much study and practice of the Word, the psalmist expresses his love of it, his commitment, his new life through the Word and his enrichment through it.

Love of the Word is uppermost in his mind and he repeats it several times. But he cannot love the Word without loving the One who gave the Word, Who is the Word: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John1:1). So he confidently asks God for help to “order his steps in the Word” so that he does not practice sin and stray from God. The psalmist understands that the Word is his “Lamp” and his “Light” for righteous living. Therefore he knows how precious the Word is; even better than “fine gold.” His happiness and sufficiency depend on it: “I rejoice at Thy Word as one that finds great treasure.”

He is committed to God’s laws in spite of any difficulties: “Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet I do not turn away from Thy statutes.” He knows that the Word is true “from the beginning” and forever. Therefore he remains constant and obedient, and readers are not surprised when the psalmist exclaims to God: “I am Yours..”

His new life is demonstrated in the changes he continues to make. Now he hates “every false way”, anything that is ungodly – vain thoughts, hypocrisy, dishonesty, selfishness etc. He is always in pursuit of the Truth which is found in Christ: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” (John14:6). In his new life, he expresses grave concern for all those who do not allow their lives to be shaped and blessed by the Word. He would be happy if all could be enriched with the knowledge and understanding which he has received.

Surely, after reading this psalm, we should ask ourselves: “What does the Word of God mean to me and what do I do about it?” Al Jones
