“Seeing that you have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Christ…..” Colossians 3:10
Renewal is such a vital part of human life, in fact, of all life. The new man mentioned in this verse refers to the one who has trusted Christ as Savior and has received a new position in Christ as a child of God. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation….all things have become new” (2Cor.5:17) But that is not the end – it is more like a new beginning, with a call to press on – not to rest on the first stage of salvation. As Christians we are all called to grow, to be “renewed in knowledge.” That is, knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is the goal set by God for us to become more and more like Christ, for His image to be ultimately perfected in us. Christ is the only perfect example we have on which to base our behavior and growth. His likeness should be our primary goal.
It is in the renewed mind and heart that the image of Christ is formed. St Paul writes: “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may discover the good, acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2) As we gain more knowledge of God through His Word, the Holy Spirit helps us to demonstrate the qualities which make up the divine character of Christ. - Qualities such as Love of God and fellowman, Humility, Kindness, Forgiveness, Mercy, Patience, Endurance, Sincerity, Honesty etc. etc.
As we make every effort to grow individually and corporately, Christ will eventually complete the job, and present us as “a glorious church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; holy and without blemish.” (Ephesians5:27)
We can never fully fathom the depth of God’s love and the inheritance He has prepared for us. Let us be grateful and live lives here which are pleasing in His sight. Al Jones
